Last week, I read this blog post by The JackB. Jack talks about blogging because you’re passionate about it and blogging what you’re passionate about. He takes exception to bloggers who blog about things they don’t really want to be talking about — all for the sake of SEO, King Content, and headlining. Jack’s post made me wonder if that’s the trap I’ve been falling into lately…

That darkness inside me…dare I call it simple humannness? Isn’t it nothing more than the gritty frailty within every human heart? If each of us were honest with ourselves, wouldn’t we admit that we all harbor a streak of that inner moonlight? Don’t we all harbor a streak of madness?

Sometimes, a writer’s just gotta get clean. Sometimes, fellow writers, what we need is a shower.
Tweet I’ve made no secret around here of my struggles with social anxiety. I’ve made some major strides in the last year, but I’ve still got some work to do. And, even once that’s done, I’ll always be an introvert. That means I have trouble in highly social situations. Even when they’re fun, and packed […]

Tweet Courtney asked me regretfully to inform you that a Christmas flu has quite thoroughly humbugged her. For the first time in her long tenure here at Unstressed Syllables, we’ll have to go without a WILAWriTWe. Alas. Send her your well wishes, and know that she’ll be back to educate us all just as soon […]

Today, my snippet of courage has come to you in the form of a poem: my attempt to convey via symbols the intangible emotions — the happiness, the wonder, the impish delight — I feel at the realization that Unstressed Syllables will be a year old tomorrow…

Tweet Today is December 14th. That means Thursday is going to be December 16th. I know, I know…I’ve just demonstrated that I’m a brilliant mathematician. Or…calendarist. Something. There’s a special significance to December 16th, though. Around here, anyway. Thursday will be the official anniversary of Unstressed Syllables. One year ago Thursday, I wrote my first […]

Tweet This week I shared a story of a major writing setback when I outran my own scene list. I’ve also told stories before about losing pages, chapters, books. The writer’s life is tragedy. Partly, that’s because of the unpredictable nature of the process. Mostly, it’s because writers spend so much of their time wallowing […]

Tweet I’m a big believer in prewriting. I design my stories, building them with care before I even start writing. Somebody once said even the best battle plan only lasts until the first shot is fired (or something to that effect). It certainly applies to writing. Stories change in the telling. It’s just part of […]

Tweet I’m not at all sure it’s a good idea to tell this story. No one’s ever called me “discerning,” though. So I’m going to tell it anyway. I’ve spent most of my life trying (successfully, for the most part) to win the love of the woman who most loves Gods Tomorrow. That’s a writer’s […]
